We are Steve and Jen Wiggers and we are preparing to follow God’s leading to serve in Kenya at Scott Christian University.
We met in high school and dated for five years before getting married in the summer of 2001. We spent the first three years of our marriage living in KY while Steve pursued his MA in Biblical Studies from Asbury Theological Seminary. Upon Steve’s graduation from seminary, we began to consider what the next steps would be for us. Around this same time, some friends of ours from church made us aware of an opportunity to serve in Africa at Kenya Highlands Bible College. We had often talked about being involved in a short term missions trip and so had some interest in this and pursued it further. In typical African fashion, we were contacted last minute by the college on May 31st to come and begin ministry at the college that fall in September. After much prayer, we accepted this invitation and by God’s grace, arrived in time and served for one year at the college. This year was challenging and invigorating and looking back, we can see that the Lord was beginning to give us a heart and vision to serve him in cross-cultural ministry.
Upon returning to the States, with the imprint of the experience on our heart and minds still, we began to ask the question as to whether the Lord might be calling us to continue this work on a more long term basis. In the meantime, we settled in the Wheaton, IL area so that Steve could pursue an additional MA degree in Biblical Exegesis at the Wheaton College Graduate School. Upon Steve’s graduation from Wheaton in May of 2007, we were preparing for the birth of our first child in August of 2007. Kenya was still on our minds, but we didn’t have a sense of any specific direction that the Lord might be leading us (yet). So, Steve pursued employment with a resettlement agency (World Relief) as a case manager, where he would be able to serve in a very cross-cultural context, working with refugees from all over the world.
Fast forward to the spring of 2009…during this time, we were contacted by some friends of ours from church who were currently serving at Scott Theological College in Kenya inviting us to come and serve at the college. As mentioned earlier, Kenya was still on our heart and minds, and we had actually been following the ministry of these particular friends through their monthly newsletters and were excited about the work they were doing there in forming leaders for the African Church. After prayer and discussion with other family and friends, we sensed that the invitation to serve at Scott was God’s specific invitation to us and began to make preparations to return to Kenya to serve at Scott Theological College. In the spring of 2010, we were appointed with SIM to serve in Kenya at Scott Theological College (now Scott Christian University).
This brings us to today where we are still making preparations to serve in Kenya and Lord willing, we hope to arrive to Kenya in July 2012 and begin ministry at Scott in August 2012. Thanks for walking with us in this journey. To God alone be the glory!
